FAQ

Flooring questions, answered

The questions we hear most at estimates. Tap one to open it.

What types of flooring do you install?

We install a variety of flooring types including solid oak floors (unfinished and pre-finished), engineered hardwood, and luxury vinyl plank (LVP). We offer patterns including straight lay, parquet, herringbone, and chevron.

Do you offer sanding and refinishing services?

Yes, sanding and refinishing is one of our most popular services. We sand your floors back to bare wood and apply your choice of stain color and finish type (water-based or oil-based) for a completely refreshed look.

Can you match my existing floor color with a custom stain?

We strive to match existing floor colors as closely as possible. While a perfect match is not always achievable due to variations in wood age and species, we can get very close and will show you test patches before committing.

Do you repair damaged floors?

Yes. We offer spot repairs for scratches, gouges, pet damage, water stains, and squeaky boards. In some cases, replacing individual boards may be the best option and we will advise you honestly on which route makes sense.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, NY Flooring Guys is fully licensed and insured. All work is completed by our own crew (never subcontractors), so you always know who is in your home.

How long does a typical flooring project take?

It depends on the scope and square footage. A refinishing job on a single room can be completed in 1–2 days. Larger multi-room installations or restorations may take 3–5 days. We provide a clear timeline in your estimate.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes, we offer a 30-day workmanship warranty on all services. If anything is not right after we finish, contact us and we will return to address it at no charge.

What areas do you serve?

We primarily serve Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk County). We occasionally serve Manhattan. Contact us to confirm your area.

How do I maintain my newly finished floors?

We provide a comprehensive floor care guide at the end of every job detailing which products to use, which to avoid, and how to protect your finish for years to come.

What is the difference between water-based and oil-based finish?

Water-based finish dries quickly (1–2 hrs between coats), has low VOCs, is less odorous, and stays clear over time. It works great for homes with pets and children. Oil-based finish takes longer to dry (24–48 hrs), has a higher VOC level with a stronger smell, and adds a warm amber tone. It creates a thicker coat suited to high-traffic areas. Both are available at similar price points.

Is there a big price difference between water-based and oil-based finishes?

Not significantly. Standard water-based and oil-based finishes are priced similarly. Commercial-grade water-based finishes designed for high-traffic areas are somewhat more expensive.

Do you work on commercial spaces?

Yes, we serve commercial clients including offices, retail spaces, and houses of worship. Commercial projects typically use commercial-grade finishes rated for high foot traffic. Contact us for a commercial estimate.
