Stair Refinishing

Professional Stair Refinishing for a Stunning, Renewed Look.

Stair refinishing is one of the most visible and highest-impact flooring projects in a home. Every person who walks through your front door sees the stairs. Worn, scratched, or mismatched stair treads undermine an otherwise beautiful floor renovation.

We refinish treads, risers, stringers, and baluster bases to match the adjacent floors exactly. This is precision work — stairs have more exposed edges, corners, and tight spaces than open floor runs. We use hand-scrapers, detail sanders, and sometimes a random orbital on treads that cannot fit the big drum sander.

For homes converting from carpet to hardwood stairs, we handle the complete transition: remove carpet and staples, evaluate tread condition, replace any split or damaged treads, sand, stain, and finish. The result is a continuous visual flow from the landing up the staircase.

What's included

  • Treads, risers, balusters, and handrails
  • Stain color matching to adjacent floors
  • Safe, slip-resistant finish options

How it works

How a stair refinishing job runs

  1. 01

    Carpet removal

For carpet-to-wood conversions, we carefully remove carpet, padding, and all staples and tack strips. We inspect treads for damage before proceeding.

  2. 02

    Tread and riser repair

Damaged or split treads are replaced. Loose treads are glued and screwed from below or through the face using colored putty over the screw head.

  3. 03

    Hand and detail sanding

Treads are sanded with orbital and detail sanders, including edges, corners, and riser faces. Results are consistent with the open floor sanding.

  4. 04

    Stain and finish

We apply stain to match the adjacent floor, then two coats of finish. Stair treads receive an extra coat in the nosing area — the highest wear zone.

Stair Refinishing questions

Can I use the stairs while they are being refinished?

We refinish every other tread on day one, and the remaining treads on day two. This gives you access to the stairs throughout the project, though we ask that you step carefully and avoid the freshly finished treads.

How long does stair refinishing take?

A standard 13-tread staircase takes 2 days: prep and first-set treads on day one, second set and finish coats on day two, with a final coat on day three if needed. Full cure in 24–48 hours.

Can you match my stair finish to my floor finish?

Yes. Matching stairs to floors is a major part of what we do. We use the same stain batches and finish products on both to achieve a seamless look.
