Border & Medallion Installation

Precision Border & Medallion Installation for Unique, Elegant Designs.

Custom wood borders and medallion installations are where craftsmanship becomes art. A well-designed border frames a room, defines a space, and tells visitors immediately that the floors were done by someone who cares about the details.

We design and install rectangular and curved perimeter borders, inlay stringing, herringbone border frames, and pre-fabricated medallion centerpieces in a range of sizes. We source medallions from Birkdale, Paris Ceramics, and custom local fabricators, or design and cut original patterns in-house.

Border and medallion work is typically combined with a standard installation project — borders installed first as a reference frame, field boards filled in around them. The result is a completely integrated floor design, not an afterthought insert.

How it works

How a border & medallion installation job runs

  1. 01

    Design consultation

We review design inspiration, choose contrasting species or stain tones, and sketch the border layout to scale before ordering materials.

  2. 02

    Border installation

Border courses are ripped to exact width, mitered at corners, and installed before the field. Medallion location is pre-marked and cut.

  3. 03

    Medallion setting

Pre-fabricated medallions are routed into the subfloor and glued in place with polymer flooring adhesive. Custom-cut medallions are assembled in sections.

  4. 04

    Field installation and finishing

Field boards are installed around the border and medallion, then the entire surface is sanded, stained to differentiate elements if desired, and finished with matching coats.

Border & Medallion Installation questions

How much do custom borders add to the cost of a floor installation?

A simple one-board border strip around a room adds $3–$5 per linear foot to the installation cost. More complex multi-strip borders, string inlays, and medallions scale from there. We provide a detailed quote for each border design.

Can you add a border to an existing floor?

It is possible but significantly more complex than adding during a new installation. We would need to remove the existing perimeter boards, install the border, and blend the finish — often requiring refinishing the full floor to get a seamless look.

Where are medallions typically placed?

Entryway centers are the most common placement. We also do medallions in dining room centers, home office feature points, and under round entry tables.
